A 2nd thought for 2DS.

Maybe it's not so bad
After the surprise announcement yesterday, I wrote a post about the 2DS and I basically said it was a waste of time. But after having some time to think about it. I can see its merits.

  1. Price - I think that the fact that the console doesn't include 3D obviously makes it cheaper to produce and that means it can have a cheaper retail price than the 3DS.
  2. The Target Audience - It's not meant for me. I think that is why I was struggling to understand it. This console is for the children that want a 3DS but are  not old enough to utilize the 3D feature. Moreover, this console is targeted at the parents. They are always going to be looking for a good deal. This offers that. They can buy the console and  not worry about any possible health risk that the 3D may have on their children. Also, there is another audience for this console. People that want a 3DS but aren't bothered about the 3D and just want to play the games and use the features. This is perfect for that because it gives them a cheaper alternative. They can still enjoy the gigantic 3DS/DS game library and won't have to fork out a lot of money on a console to do it.
  3. Design - I still think it's absolutely hideous!! But, I can understand why it looks the way it does. The target audience is young, so the console needs to be able to withstand any abuse that they may un/intentionally dish out. By taking out the hinge and making the console a unibody design, it prevents the problem of having the hinge be damaged which would render the console unusable.
  4. It's still a 3DS at heart - At the end of the day, it can still play 3DS and DS games. Which is the most important thing. It means that those younger gamers that also may not be able to afford a 3DS won't miss out on amazing games like Pokemon X & Y or the upcoming Super Smash Bros game coming to the 3DS. Moreover, it still has all of the other features that 3DS has.
I have had a change of heart about the 2DS. It may not be the most beautiful console in the world, but that isn't the point. It's the function that is key and the fact that it will allow younger gamers to play 3DS/DS games at an affordable price. At the end of the day, who can argue with that?
